History

Hillcrest Baptist Church
began as a mission of the First Baptist Church of Clarksville, Tennessee
on March 4,
1964, at the Tarpley Funeral Chapel in New Providence, Tennessee. There were 18
people present at that first meeting. On May 3, 1964, moderator
Garner Griffey called the mission congregation to order for the purpose of
calling their first pastor John P.S. Humphrey. Pastor Humphrey served until his
resignation on August 1, 1971. On September 9, 1964, the Dover Road Chapel
Mission voted to construct it's first building. Construction began on September
21, 1964. The name Hillcrest was adopted at the October 28, 1964, business
meeting to be used upon occupying the new building.
On October 17, 1965, the
Dover Road Chapel was constituted into a Baptist church with 179 charter
members. The church doubled the building size in 1966 with a building that
included a fellowship hall, kitchen and Sunday School space. On the third Sunday in
January of 1972, Marvin E. Hines, Sr. was called as the church's second pastor.
Pastor Hines served until his retirement December 31, 1985. The June 1986
business meeting marked the calling of Steve R. Murphree to become the third
pastor of Hillcrest Baptist Church. Pastor Murphree resigned in June 1991.
On the third Sunday of
November 1991, the church called Larry G. Mulberry to become their fourth
pastor. For the past six years God has blessed pastor and people together. From
November 1991 to August 1997, Sunday School attendance has more than tripled and
membership increased from 207 to 634. The church year of 1996-97 saw 151
additions with 81 people following our Lord in believers' baptism. On September
29, 1996, Hillcrest Baptist Church moved into their new Praise, Prayer, and
Worship center, a 13,500 square foot building which will seat 750 for worship.
June 1997 saw the addition of Michael T. Huggins as our minister of music and
youth.
Rev. Mulberry
retired in 2003. God
gets all the praise, honor and glory for the past blessings and we joyfully look
forward to the
Christ-honoring future
that God has in store for us. Mike Huggins resigned April 2004 for another
calling from the Lord. In April 2004, Hillcrest called Archer Thorpe as Interim
Pastor, and Douglas Burr as Interim Minister of Music. We thank the Lord for
bringing these two men to us.

On September 12, 2004, the
church called Jerry Harwell to become our fifth pastor.
We look
forward to many great years together.
